I want to show the subject from different angles. It is probably an old Jewish thing. To look at a something from many different angles.
In my paintings I try to get there, by using many layers. For every layer of reality the complexity of the painting grows exponentially. The number of viewpoints or points of view grows, and the perspective dissolves. It sometimes makes it difficult to see the original motive. For instance the picture I had at the Berlin show had the word JEW written over a star. I took the motive from a google image search. Many people stared at the painting, but did not see the letters or the motive. I enjoy that complexity myself, but it makes it really difficult to adjust the colors. I confront these problems in different ways. Those ways are:
I try to keep my motives as simple as possible.
If I paint inside my studio, I choose graphic objects like a star of David or short words or iconic cartoonish pictures of animals and people and objects.
If I paint outside I choose a three. I have some favorites in my garden. When I paint outside
the problems with the color also almost solves itself. I simply steal the colors from nature and
that never goes completely wrong. It is like putting flowers together. An example could be the
wet evening sky we have in Denmark. The colors go from a whitish yellow to an orange and then
all kinds of lead blues to different kind of deep purples.
